The strange, the unscientific, the crazy, and plain daft verses in the Hadith

This section looks at just Sunni Hadiths. Later I will put together a similar list for the Shiite Hadiths when time permits.

Scholars estimate there are roughly 36,000 Hadiths in the major Sunni collections (around 7,000 if repetitions are excluded). I have tried to mainly stick to Sahih(Authentic) Hadith – that is to say the ones that Islam feels are genuine as opposed to Sa’if (weak) Hadiths, but I have put a few weaker ones in there if I found them to funny or strange enough to warrant a special mention (remember that all al-Bukhari and Imam Muslim Hadiths are considered sahih).

As you go through these Hadiths keep in mind that most if not nearly all of Islamic doctrine is based on the Hadiths and not the Quran.

This is by no means an exhaustive list because there are so many to go at and logging them all would be a life’s work.

Allah's Messenger said, "If a fly falls in the vessel of any of you, let him dip all of it (into the vessel) and then throw it away, for in one of its wings there is a disease and in the other there is healing (antidote for it) i e. the treatment for that disease."

Sahih al-Bukhari 5782.

Very confused statements about the sex of a child.

…….As for the resemblance of the child to its parents: If a man has sexual intercourse with his wife and gets discharge first, the child will resemble the father, and if the woman gets discharge first, the child will resemble her……

From Sahih al-Bukhari 3329

Narrated Zainab bint Abi Salama:

Um Salama said, "Um Sulaim said, 'O Allah's Messenger! Allah does not refrain from saying the truth! Is it obligatory for a woman to take a bath after she gets nocturnal discharge?' He said, 'Yes, if she notices the water (i.e. discharge).' Um Salama smiled and said, 'Does a woman get discharge?' Allah's Apostle said. 'Then why does a child resemble (its mother)?"

Sahih al-Bukhari 3328.

Anas b. Malik reported that Umm Sulaim narrated it that she asked the Messenger of Allah about a woman who sees in a dream what a man sees (sexual dream). The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon bi m) said:

In case a woman sees that, she must take a bath. Umm Sulaim said: I was bashful on account of that and said: Does it happen? Upon this the Messenger of Allah said: Yes (it does happen), otherwise how can (a child) resemble her? Man's discharge (i. e. sperm) is thick and white and the discharge of woman is thin and yellow; so the resemblance comes from the one whose genes prevail or dominate.

Sahih Muslim 311.

These two Hadiths are best placed together. Muhrim is someone who cleansed themselves and put on white garments. What the Hadiths are saying when put together is that Muhammad visited all his wives (maybe 9 maybe 11) for sexual purposes, one after the other and only afterwards did he bathe - yuk. And to get him ready for this, Aisha (his youngest wife) would scent him up so that he could smell nice for all his wives - well maybe for the first few at least. Imagine being the last wife of the round - lucky lady.

Anas bin Malik said, "The Prophet used to visit all his wives in a round, during the day and night and they were eleven in number." I asked Anas, "Had the Prophet the strength for it?" Anas replied, "We used to say that the Prophet was given the strength of thirty (men)." And Sa`id said on the authority of Qatada that Anas had told him about nine wives only (not eleven).

Sahih al-Bukhari 268

Narrated Muhammad bin Al-Muntathir:

on the authority of his father that he had asked `Aisha about the saying of Ibn `Umar (i.e. he did not like to be a Muhrim while the smell of scent was still coming from his body). `Aisha said, "I scented Allah's Messenger and he went round (had sexual intercourse with) all his wives, and in the morning he was Muhrim (after taking a bath)."

Abu Musa al-Ash’ari reported the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) as saying :

Allah created Adam from a handful which he took from the whole of the earth ; so the children of Adam are in accordance with the earth : some red, some white, some black, some a mixture, also smooth and rough, bad and good.

Sunan Abi Dawud 4693 See also Mishkat al-Masabih 100 and Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2955.

A group of people from `Ukl (or `Uraina) tribe ----but I think he said that they were from `Ukl came to Medina and (they became ill, so) the Prophet ordered them to go to the herd of (Milch) she-camels and told them to go out and drink the camels' urine and milk (as a medicine). So they went and drank it, and when they became healthy, they killed the shepherd and drove away the camels.

Once Gabriel promised the Prophet (that he would visit him, but Gabriel did not come) and later on he said, "We, angels, do not enter a house which contains a picture or a dog.

I stuffed for the Prophet a pillow decorated with pictures (of animals) which looked like a Namruqa (i.e. a small cushion). He came and stood between the two doors and his face began to change. I said, "O Allah's Messenger! What did we do wrong?" He said, "What is this pillow?" I said, "I have prepared this pillow for you, so that you may recline on it." He said, "Don't you know that angels do not enter a house wherein there are pictures; and whoever makes a picture will be punished on the Day of Resurrection and will be asked to give life to (what he has created)?"

Sahih al-Bukhari 3224.

Allah's Messenger, the true and truly inspired said, "(The matter of the Creation of) a human being is put together in the womb of the mother in forty days, and then he becomes a clot of thick blood for a similar period, and then a piece of flesh for a similar period. Then Allah sends an angel who is ordered to write four things. He is ordered to write down his (i.e. the new creature's) deeds, his livelihood, his (date of) death, and whether he will be blessed or wretched (in religion). Then the soul is breathed into him.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3208.

Narrated Al-Abbas ibn AbdulMuttalib:

I was sitting in al-Batha with a company among whom the Messenger of Allah was sitting, when a cloud passed above them.

The Messenger of Allah looked at it and said: What do you call this? They said: Sahab.

He said: And muzn? They said: And muzn. He said: And anan? They said: And anan. AbuDawud said: I am not quite confident about the word anan. He asked: Do you know the distance between Heaven and Earth? They replied: We do not know. He then said: The distance between them is seventy-one, seventy-two, or seventy-three years. The heaven which is above it is at a similar distance (going on till he counted seven heavens). Above the seventh heaven there is a sea, the distance between whose surface and bottom is like that between one heaven and the next. Above that there are eight mountain goats the distance between whose hoofs and haunches is like the distance between one heaven and the next. Then Allah, the Blessed and the Exalted, is above that.

Sunan Abi Dawud 4723. This is rated as a Da’if (weak) Hadith but it was worth putting in because it is both strange and amusing.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

That once he was in the company of the Prophet carrying a water pot for his ablution and for cleaning his private parts. While he was following him carrying it (i.e. the pot), the Prophet said, "Who is this?" He said, "I am Abu Huraira." The Prophet said, "Bring me stones in order to clean my private parts, and do not bring any bones or animal dung." Abu Huraira went on narrating: So I brought some stones, carrying them in the corner of my robe till I put them by his side and went away. When he finished, I walked with him and asked, "What about the bone and the animal dung?" He said, "They are of the food of Jinns. The delegate of Jinns of (the city of) Nasibin came to me--and how nice those Jinns were--and asked me for the remains of the human food. I invoked Allah for them that they would never pass by a bone or animal dung but find food on them."

Sahih al-Bukhari 3860

The Prophet said, "Isn't the witness of a woman equal to half of that of a man?" The women said, "Yes." He said, "This is because of the deficiency of a woman's mind."

Sahih al-Bukhari 2658

The Prophet said: "I was shown the Hell-fire and that the majority of its dwellers were women who were ungrateful." It was asked, "Do they disbelieve in Allah?" (or are they ungrateful to Allah?) He replied, "They are ungrateful to their husbands and are ungrateful for the favors and the good (charitable deeds) done to them. If you have always been good (benevolent) to one of them and then she sees something in you (not of her liking), she will say, 'I have never received any good from you."

Narrated Sa`id bin Al-Musaiyab:

Abu Huraira said, "I heard Allah's Messenger saying, 'There is none born among the off-spring of Adam, but Satan touches it. A child therefore, cries loudly at the time of birth because of the touch of Satan, except Mary and her child." Then Abu Huraira recited: "And I seek refuge with You for her and for her offspring from the outcast Satan"

Ibn 'Umar reported Allah's Messenger as saying:

Do not intend to observe prayer at the time of the rising of the sun nor at its setting, for it rises between the horns of Satan.

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Dharr that the Messenger of Allah one day said:

Do you know where the sun goes? They replied: Allah and His Apostle know best. He (the Holy Prophet) observed: Verily it (the sun) glides till it reaches its resting place under the Throne. Then it falls prostrate and remains there until it is asked: Rise up and go to the place whence you came, and it goes back and continues emerging out from its rising place and then glides till it reaches its place of rest under the Throne and falls prostrate and remains in that state until it is asked: Rise up and return to the place whence you came, and it returns and emerges out from it rising place and the it glides (in such a normal way) that the people do not discern anything ( unusual in it) till it reaches its resting place under the Throne. Then it would be said to it: Rise up and emerge out from the place of your setting, and it will rise from the place of its setting. The Messenger of Allah said. Do you know when it would happen? It would happen at the time when faith will not benefit one who has not previously believed or has derived no good from the faith.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, "Allah created Adam, making him 60 cubits tall [about 30 meters]. When He created him, He said to him, "Go and greet that group of angels, and listen to their reply, for it will be your greeting (salutation) and the greeting (salutations of your offspring." So, Adam said (to the angels), As-Salamu Alaikum (i.e. Peace be upon you). The angels said, "As-salamu Alaika wa Rahmatu-l-lahi" (i.e. Peace and Allah's Mercy be upon you). Thus the angels added to Adam's salutation the expression, 'Wa Rahmatu-l-lahi,' Any person who will enter Paradise will resemble Adam (in appearance and figure). People have been decreasing in stature since Adam's creation.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, "Yawning is from Satan and if anyone of you yawns, he should check his yawning as much as possible, for if anyone of you (during the act of yawning) should say: 'Ha', Satan will laugh at him."

Sahih al-Bukhari 3289

Anas bin Malik narrated that:

The Prophet said: “When Allah created the earth, it started shaking. So He created the mountains, and said to them: ‘Upon it’ so it began to settle. The angels were amazed at the strength of the mountains, so they said: ‘O Lord! Is there among your creatures one who is more severe than the mountains?’ He said: ‘Yes. Iron.’ They said: ‘O Lord! Then is there anything among your creatures that is more severe than that iron?’ He said: ‘Yes. Fire.’ So they said: ‘O Lord! Is there anything among your creatures that is more severe than fire?’ He said: ‘Yes. Water.’ They said: ‘O Lord! Is there anything among your creatures that is more severe than water?’ He said: ‘Yes. Wind.’ They said: ‘O Lord! Is there anything among your creatures more severe than wind?’ He said: ‘Yes. The son of Adam. He gives charity with his right hands, while hiding it from his left.’”

Grade: Hasan. Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3369.

Behold ! There ran four rivers, two were hidden and two were visible, I asked, 'What are these two kinds of rivers, O Gabriel?' He replied,' As for the hidden rivers, they are two rivers in Paradise and the visible rivers are the Nile and the Euphrates.

Taken from Sahih al-Bukhari 3887.

This is a long Hadith and is allegedly speaking of when Muhammad went up to the seventh heaven on the so called night of power or night journey. The four rivers are flowing from under a lote tree, so is saying that is where the Euphrates and Nile start. The whole Hadith makes interesting reading because it relates (again allegedly) how Muhammad met different prophets at each of the seven heavens and received instruction about praying five times a day.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:

"The Jews came to the Prophet and said: 'O Abul-Qasim! Inform us about the thunder, what is it?' He said: 'An angel among the angels, who is responsible for the clouds. He has a piece of fire wherever that he drives the clouds wherever Allah wills.' They said: 'Then what is this noise we hear?' He said: 'It is him, striking the clouds when he drives them on, until it goes where it is ordered.

From Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3117 which is Grade Hasan.

Narrated Ibn `Umar:

Allah's Messenger said, "Keys of the unseen knowledge are five which nobody knows but Allah . . . nobody knows what will happen tomorrow; nobody knows what is in the womb; nobody knows what he will gain tomorrow; nobody knows at what place he will die; and nobody knows when it will rain."

Sahih al-Bukhari 1039.

Two of these we do know now due to advances in technology – what is in the womb and when it will rain (though the rain bit is only reliable for a day or to). Actually this comes from the Quran 31:34.

Narrated `Amr bin Maimun:

During the pre-lslamic period of ignorance I saw a she-monkey surrounded by a number of monkeys. They were all stoning it, because it had committed illegal sexual intercourse. I too, stoned it along with them.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

(The Prophet) Solomon said, "Tonight I will sleep with (my) ninety wives, each of whom will get a male child who will fight for Allah's Cause." On that, his companion (Sufyan said that his companion was an angel) said to him, "Say, "If Allah will (Allah willing)." But Solomon forgot (to say it). He slept with all his wives, but none of the women gave birth to a child, except one who gave birth to a halfboy. Abu Huraira added: The Prophet said, "If Solomon had said, "If Allah will" (Allah willing), he would not have been unsuccessful in his action, and would have attained what he had desired." Once Abu Huraira added: Allah apostle said, "If he had accepted."

Sahih al-Bukhari 6720. See also Sahih al-Bukhari 5242 (which says 100 wives) and Sahih al-Bukhari 3424 (which says 70 ladies).

Narrated `Abdullah:

A person was mentioned before the Prophet (p.b.u.h) and he was told that he had kept on sleeping till morning and had not got up for the prayer. The Prophet said, "Satan urinated in his ears."

Abu Huraira reported:

The Apostle of Allah said. When any one of you awakes up from sleep and performs ablution, he must clean his nose three times, for the devil spends the night in the interior of his nose.

Sahih Muslim 238

Narrated Abu Sa`id:

A man came to the prophet and said, 'My brother has got loose motions. The Prophet said, Let him drink honey." The man again (came) and said, 'I made him drink (honey) but that made him worse.' The Prophet said, 'Allah has said the Truth, and the `Abdomen of your brother has told a lie."

Narrated Sa`id bin Zaid:

I heard the Prophet saying, "Truffles are like Manna (i.e. they grow naturally without man's care) and their water heals eye diseases."

Narrated Sa`d:

Allah's Messenger said, "He who eats seven 'Ajwa dates every morning, will not be affected by poison or magic on the day he eats them."

Sahih al-Bukhari 5445

Obviosly Muhammad didn't eat these dates on the day he was poisoned by Zaynab bint Al-Harith.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, "When you hear the crowing of roosters, ask for Allah's Blessings for (their crowing indicates that) they have seen an angel. And when you hear the braying of donkeys, seek Refuge with Allah from Satan for (their braying indicates) that they have seen a Satan."

Sahih al-Bukhari 3303. See also Sahih Muslim 2729.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger as saying:

The earth would consume all of the son of Adam except his tailbone. From it he was created, and from it he will be recreated (on the Day of Resurrection).

Sahih Muslim 2955b

While it is true bones can last for thousands of years under certain conditions, generally bones decay within a few hundred years - sometimes much shorter periods times. There is no evidence of the tailbone lasting longer than any other bone and there is no scientific reason why they should. [1]

There are a number of Hadiths that say water is always pure regardless on what had happened to it before hand. These verses will put you off your food.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar:

The Prophet , was asked about water (in desert country) and what is frequented by animals and wild beasts. He replied: When there is enough water to fill two pitchers, it bears no impurity.

Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani). Sunan Abi Dawud 63

Narrated AbuSa'id al-Khudri:

I heard that the people asked the Prophet of Allah: Water is brought for you from the well of Buda'ah. It is a well in which dead dogs, menstrual clothes and excrement of people are thrown. The Messenger of Allah replied: Verily water is pure and is not defiled by anything.

Abu Dawud said I heard Qutaibah b. Sa'id say: I asked the person in charge of the well of Bud'ah about the depth of the well. He replied: At most the water reaches pubes. Then I asked: Where does it reach when its level goes down ? He replied: Below the private part of the body.

Abu Dawud said: I measured the breadth of the well of Buda'ah with my sheet which I stretched over it. I them measured it with the hand. It measured six cubits in breadth. I then asked the man who opened the door of garden for me and admitted me to it: Has the condition of this well changed from what it had originally been in the past ? He replied: No. I saw the color of water in this well had changed.

Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani). Sunan Abi Dawud 67

Narrated Ibn `Umar:

Allah's Messenger said, "A believer eats in one intestine (is satisfied with a little food), and a kafir (unbeliever) or a hypocrite eats in seven intestines (eats too much).

Sahih al-Bukhari 5394.

There are a number of Hadiths that say non-believers have seven intestines while believers have only one. Most don’t give the explanation of it being a metaphor for eating too much. While I admit that, that is a reasonable way of explaining the verses, it has to be said that it implies that you never find a Muslim who eats too much. I think we all know that is not true in reality. Next time you see a fat Muslim you could suggest that they are a kafir and see what they say. At least you will know that if you run away after they get angry, they won’t be able to catch you.
