What are my next steps that I need to take now I am a Christian?

Read the Bible
This is probably the most important thing you must do as a Christian. By reading the Bible this is the main way that God is going to speak to you in your Christian walk. Within its pages you will find all of God's truth revealed, guidance on how to live as a Christian, encouragement from the Lord when times are bad, and words that will give hope and joy in everyday life.
God can speak to you in other ways such as prayer, or from what someone shares with you, but the Bible is the safest way to know what you are hearing is God's will. If you feel God is leading you in a direction that is contary to the teachings of the Bible, then it is the Bible you are to believe - it is the ultimate authority.
Assuming you are looking for the Bible in English, I would suggest a modern translation such as the New International Version (NIV) or the English Standard Version (ESV). There are a number of old English translations that use old English words such as thee, thy, and thou etc and you may prefer one of those versions. The classic old English translation would be the King James Version (KJV), also known as the authorised verion (because it was authorised by King James I).
Luckily these days you can access many different translation and languages for free, either online or as a download. Not everyone likes to read online but it can be very useful for study purposes.
A website I recommend and use often is Biblehub.com as it has a lot of study tools such as the Greek and Hebrew original versions.
A warning I need to give is this. Everywhere you turn, people will be attacking the Bible which is not at all surprising because this is God's main way of communicating his truth and his guidance for us all. Some of the people who will attack the Bible won't know what they are talking about. They will say things such as "the Bible contradicts itself but when you ask for examples they will not have any or they will give you very simplistic examples. There is another group who we often refer to as Bible skeptics. This group can be better informed and can even have in their numbers Bible "experts" who will have a degree in something like New Testaments Studies". These people can ask and tell you things that as a new Christian you just won't be able to answer. But remember this, because God's word is the truth, there will always be an explanation. It won't be easy to find in all cases but it is the case "that the truth is out there". It is significant that Satan's first words recorded in the Bible were "has God said" (Genesis 3:1).
There is a lot of help to be found on the Internet but if you are struggling, you can also email me (gospeljohn14verse6@gmail.com) and I will help you best I can.
One of the main areas of attack comes with the subject of evolution versus creation. Most people in the world these days think that evolution is a proven scientific fact. This is simply not true. A good internet site I recommend for info on this subject is creation.com which has a massive amount of information.
Pray in different ways and all the time
There are different kinds of prayer in the church that fall into two main categories. One is public prayer and the other in private prayer.
Public prayer is what it sounds like - praying together with other Christian whether in a church building or in someones house. Matthew 18:20 tells us For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them. This suggest that there is an extra blessing in praying together.
Private prayer is where as an individual Christian has a time of prayer on their own. It can and is often joined together with personnel Bible study. This is often called having a private time with the Lord. A lot of Christian growth comes by this means.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 tells us pray without ceasing. Now of course that doesn't mean spend all your time in a room somewhere praying but it means to always have an attitude of prayer all the time. It means to include Jesus in what ever you are doing in your normal day to day life. It isn't what we tend to do naturally but it is possible with God's help to get to a place where you include God in every part of your life. It may be as simple as praying to the Lord to help you in whatever task you are doing such as a task at work or at home, or at a deeper level it could be living in constant fellowship with the Lord. Christians who reach this blessed state testify that it is a lovely place to be.
Find a church
This may sound easy but of course they can be many obstacles. One may be that you live in a country where Christians are persecuted and church gatherings are forbidden. Or it may be that you live somewhere remote or with no Christians in the area so no churches are available. The only solution I can offer for this is to pray for the Lord to bring you across another Christian who you can fellowship with. Fellowship is very good for our encouragement, even if it can not be done as often as we would like.
I live in the UK and we have a lot of churches but they are not all good. In this scenario I would suggest visiting a lot of them in your area until you find one that you feel God is calling you too.
If there is abundance of churches in you region then I would suggest as I said above visit a good deal of them. What you are looking for is a church that has total believe and trust in God's word (the Bible), trys to follow God's word as best as they can and, is friendly to both visitors and each other.
If it has lots of activities such as Bible studies, prayer meeting, some social meetings, then that is also good.
Tip for when looking for a church
Jesus said this "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." When you enter a church see if you can spot how much they love one and another as this is a good sign that they are trying to follow their Lord. Don't confuse things like them being friendly and welcoming which are all good things but love is much more. It is shown in how accepting they are of each other and an affection that goes deeper than just greeting each other. If you witness this then it shows they are getting something right.
Share your faith (if you can)
What you now have is the gospel (gospel means good news in the original Greek) and the Lord wants you to share that good news with those who have not found it. The reasons for this are that God loves the world (John 3:16, 2 Peter 3:9) and wants to save them from the coming judgement and be united with Him in fellowship and love. He also commands us to take the good news out into the world and share it, Matthew 28:19-20.
This has to be done with care if you live in a country that has declared being a Christian against the law or attemping to share the gospel illegal. It could result in prison or worse. Some families can also cut you off if they find out you have converted to Christianity. These are things to be aware of so please take care and ask God to lead you in such things. Pray that God will create opportunities for you to share the gospel safely.
We are all instructed to share with gentleness and respect 1 Peter 3:15, so avoid getting into heated arguments. You will always come across people who really don't want to know, so leave them in peace - who knows, later they may change their minds as God works on them.
Being filled with the Holy Spirit
Being filled with Spirit which is a command (Eph 5:18), has a number of ways that Christians describe it. Another common phrase is the baptism of the Spirit. What it is trying to say is that as a Christian, we are to let the Holy Spirit empower us in our daily lives and not to serve God in our own strength. Jesus tells us that apart from him we can do nothing (John 15:5) and He has promised us that he will send his Spirit to us - to live in us - when we believe in Him (John 14:16-21). In fact there are too many verses to quote that point to that show us we need to have the life of God in us to be of any service to God. If we do anything in our own strength we will tend to fail, but not only that, it is only what we do in his power that God is pleased with.
This is actually good news because we don't have to work at pleasing God or doing what He commands in our own strength, but instead He promises to be all we need to accomplish what He requires of us, as long as we look to Him to provide and trust Him for it. In fact Jesus is waiting for us to ask him for the strength and power that we need in whatever circumstance we find ourself in. We are told this "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Phil 4:13) and we also have this wonderful promise "He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all--how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?" (Romans 8:32). In case you didn't catch it, it is telling us that if God would give up something as precious as His only Son, then anything else is going to be easy for Him to give us in comparison.
To sum up, get into the habit of seeking God's empowering every day for every task regardless of how big or small it may be and you will be much blessed by Him.
